The "Witness Position" is A Sacred Cow: "Me"

The "Witness" doesn't know "witnessing",
even in the most ordinary sense.
The "Witness" only "knows" what is witnessed --
and then, only after a short-term memory has formed.

Seeking The "Witness" position, described as an essential aspect of spiritual practice, can be a pitfall to practice -- an entrenched, uninspected, and unrecognized version of the egoic stance -- i.e., a "sacred cow".

This entry illuminates that pitfall, so you don't fall into it.
I'm going to start out by laying some groundwork.  I'm going to discuss the "behind the scenes of our identity" -- whatever our individual identity may be. The point of "behind the scenes" is, just because we can't see it doesn't mean that it's absent; it's just faded from our attention, second nature.

Witnessing as an ostensibly spiritual practice that we may do is an act of intention, is not The Witness Position or Witnessing; it's the egoic identity in "drag".

CATCHING OURSELVES "AT IT"
It's an oddity, and a remarkable one, at that, that I keep discovering more and more of the ways I automatically do things -- my habits and characteristics of life.

If you've had the experience of catching yourself at something, you know what I mean. If not, do The Gold Key Release and you'll have that experience in the days that follow; we call that experience, "Burn Off".  Other terms used are, "tapas", "heat", "boil-off".

If you haven't had that experience, yet, let's say that I move from being clueless about the "wherefores" ("whys") of my life-developments, to catching myself repeatedly in a certain mood, train of thought, or speech patterns, to feeling certain things ("There's a pattern!"), to seeing how that pattern explains certain recurring events of my existence, i.e., things about which I feel stuck, moods, chronic quandaries.

With that discovery, I am able to start to dissolve those underlying, controlling patterns and to feel them dissolve (more about that when I discuss The Gold Key Release and other TetraSeed transformation procedures).

Here's the oddity: I keep on discovering and dealing with "new ones", which means I was oblivious to them, before, and now, they've surfaced.

That I was oblivious of them is obvious; I was experiencing the consequences, before, without knowing the unconscious cause of those consequences -- not making connections between certain things I chronically said, thought, or felt about my life experience and their cause . . . . .

. . . . . a disconnect, whereby I chronically shot myself in the foot without knowing how or why I was doing so, while I felt and believed that I was innocent and doing something entirely differently, with different expected outcomes.

Well, I was, also, doing something else.  Two value patterns ( memory patterns ) were interacting, colliding with each other in me, producing a standing ( "conflict" ) wave with unanticipated results.

As I said, I would discover patterns of thought, behavior, or feeling. Having discovered them, I would juxtapose them and compare them to each other.  Whatever holding patterns would disclose themselves, I could then recognize their "collision" as shaping forces of my actions and life -- but, previously, behind the scenes, unrecognized.

Fancy, hundred-dollar word, "juxtapose"; it means, "to put them next to each other, to compare them, to see their inter-relationship".  The fancy, single word is easier.  Juxtapose.

So, for example:

Two patterns recently came to my attention:

One controlling pattern that I discovered was

Single-Minded, Unbending Intent

It's not necessary to know why I developed this pattern.  I could say why, but it would divert us, too much from this discussion of Witnessing.  Let's just say that there were relationships in my life that called for its development.

Another controlling pattern that I discovered was the righteous valuing of

Radical, Uncaused Joy

"Radical" doesn't mean, "extreme"; it means, at-the-root of things, uncaused by anything else. "Radical" is like, "radish" -- a root vegetable.

I discovered that I was grossly out of balance, on the "Single-Minded, Unbending Intent" side.

I juxtaposed and compared, "single-minded, unbending intent" with "radical, uncaused joy" and discovered that "single-minded, unbending intent" had overpowered "joy" with a kind of dominant force. As a result, I had developed a personality almost as light and scintillating as that of Henry Kissinger.

Moreover, these two ways of acting were an "either-or" proposition:

"Feeling joy?  You're not taking proper account of the situation."
Either, uncaused radical joy -- or -- single-minded, unbending intent

I had a tendency to irritability that was almost Irish and a morose disposition that was very Russian.

That's what I mean by, "finding myself out".

However, another possibility exists:

INTEGRATION
Single-Minded, Unbending Intent in Radical, Uncaused Joy

I was operating from the non-integrated condition, experiencing its consequences (alternation between the two states). I wasn't connecting the consequences of these certain second-nature ways of operating (i.e., the alternation between radical joy and single-minded, unbending intent, vs. the synergy of radical joy and single-minded, unbending intent).

There just seemed to be a limit to the reach of my ability to imagine anything different.  I seemed stuck with certain trends of experience that I could describe (having seen them, before), but was unable to reach much beyond them without being pulled back.  There were no accessible "Strange Attractors" (novel experiences) out in that direction of mind-space to go and visit as an alternative; instead, whenever I tried to imagine anything different, I encountered an incomprehensible void and flickerings of possibility that fleetingly caught my attention without settling into a defined form.

So, here were two "control-patterns" or "organizing principles".  They presented an opportunity:  to contrast them with each other might provide a new intuitive understanding.  Contrasting these two might reveal hitherto-hidden holding patterns.

So, I applied the Middle-Way Memory Matrix Ritual to those two attributes:

Single-Minded, Unbending Intent
Radical, Uncaused Joy

and ran the process until I could hardly remember what I was working on; the purpose of the procedure is to balance, to synthesize, and to dissolve the selected pairs of items chosen to put through the procedure.

I allow that this kind dissolution might occur toward the end of the process; it's a sign of success. However I also have to be more deliberate to continue. Jury's still out on the longer-term effects.

The upshot of all this:

I have seemingly be up to all kinds of things to which I have been oblivious. These things inevitably color ( or bias ) my capacity for "witnessing".

and

There exists a process by which those things to which I have been oblivious, once surfaced, may be dissolved, leaving clearer (but not absolutely clear) witnessing.

There exists NO "spiritual" WITNESS "position".
Anything with a position is, "me".

ACTION, SENSATION, AND MEMORY
  • In the worldspace of memory, memory patterns precede and shape action.
  • In the worldspace of action, action generates sensations or experiences. Action precedes sensation.
  • In the world of sensation, sensation becomes memory.

That's how our actions, sensations, and memory fit together -- circularly -- and how our actions always precede our awareness of them.

That's true, now.

We do not know our own actions until after they have started happening.  We are inevitably witnessing ourself -- but with a confused notion that we are in control of what we're witnessing --
and our idea of control amounts to chasing after the effects of causes beyond our reach.

like a dog chasing after a flock of birds

Our patterns of control exist before our outward doing of things,
as low-level states of readiness for action,
idling,
and so they exist before our witnessing of our doing.

The movements of the will (intentionality with attention)
operate sight-unseen, arising from mysterious depths
of latent tendency in the living being,
alive, lurking.

When we adjust our willingness and willpower,
we do so from a place that feels like, "directing intent",
that cannot be put into words or described.

only felt.

There is the peculiar notion that colors our experience,
the notion that, "I am in control of this," "I am actively participating in this."

Me - me - me - me - me - me - me . . . . .

It's that "dummy" (or "avatar") assertion that cloaks a direct awareness of things as they happen -- in mystery -- even as we witness and perform them.  It's the explanatory myth of "who dunnit."  The control center.  The Sacred Cow.  Me. The myth.

But a moment's consideration of the fact that new awareness of things
emerges in us strongly suggests that everything about us already exists and emerges into attention, that we catch ourselves at it after it is already in motion, not at its start.  What does that mean for the notion of control?

There is no such thing as unbiased ( pure ) witnessing,
of a "Spiritual Witness".

said another way:

The "Witness" Learns Absolutely Nothing from Experience
and remains forever unknown.

And what does that do to the experience of control?

It shifts control into paradox mode,
in which actions start from mysterious origin
with reasons sounding the horn.

MEMORY AND THE WITNESS POSITION

True (Unbiased) Witnessing Would Have to Be
the Meeting

of Absolute Ignorance with Experience --
and there ain't no such animal.

Having laid the groundwork, now I can discuss the Witness Position.

People start off cultivating the intention to pay attention in order to create "witnessing".  That's not pure witnessing; it's effort.

The Witness Position is NO POSITION.  It's not something someone does.  It's our inherent nature.  It can't be cultivated.  What can be cultivated is attention, which is directed and focussed awareness.

The acts, directing and focussing, can be cultivated.  People call that act of cultivation, "Mindfulness", another misnomer, since "mind" is an activity that colors attention, and is not awareness, the universal, Kosmic Presence.

Anything added to that is an activity, not witnessing.  It's "me," in action.

The Witness Position gets revealed when the effort of paying attention gets recognized as another effort and is released.  Then, the field of awareness stands out to (or really, as) intuition, without location, form, center, or content.  The contrast between that intuition and world-experience (inevitable, as we are alive), is the so-called Witness Position.

If you believe you're in the Witness Position,
you are -- but not in the way you think:
You have nothing to do with it.

Somatic Education is Emergence

Somatic education exercises are best understood as "adaptive", where the word, "education", means something and isn't there just for window dressing.

People are caught in dysfunctional patterns.  These dysfunctional patterns don't somehow exist "in the mind" without a physiological counterpart; they consist of both psychological and physiological perspectives of the same thing:  adaptive memory -- memory formed as a response to experience, as pain or pleasure, physiological and psychological.

We feel that those dysfunctional patterns are "bigger than we."  We're in their grip.

How do we get equal to them?

by matching them, duplicating them, replicating them, causing them, recognizing them

In practice, somatic education exercises produce feel-able effects by the end of the first practice session.  "Feel-able effects" means that you feel yourself move differently, your balance is different, places that were tight are now looser.  Your limbs may feel longer, or your whole side longer.  Pain may have decreased.  That's what "feel-able effects" means.  That's for one practice session.

However, "practice" means practice.

The feel-able effects of any given somatic education exercise are likely to vary from session to session, as well as having similarities from session to session.

That's to be expected.  It's supposed to happen.  It's the nature of change.

What is also to be expected is that the effects accumulate.

What's accumulating is your memory of these movements and what they feel like.

You're getting familiar with them.

And the more familiar you are with the movement pattern, the more accessible it is to you, the less you need the old, dysfunctional pattern, and you switch over.

That's the process called, in behavioral psychology, "extinction" of an old habit -- the movement memory habits of dysfunction naturally get superceded by mastering yourself in those areas -- where "mastering yourself" means "doing as you intend to do and not doing as you don't intend to do" (to oversimplify, a bit).

In these terms, it means getting free of the pain of unwittingly self-inflicted muscular tension habits, recovering your mobility, feeling and moving more like yourself as you prefer, able to dissipate pain and stress at will, overcoming the effects of time and experience to freshen yourself, so that you continue to grow and develop abilities that make you more than you were, before, not less, as you age.

if you're effective in your own somatic education

You are likely to experience the accumulating effects of these exercises as an ebb and flow, going in and out like the tides, having some better days and some worse days.  As you progress, the better days come more often and you feel better, and when you feel worse, you don't feel as bad as before.  Symptoms are likely to shift, you may feel places where you didn't know you have places, you may get "muscle sore" for a day or so, from time to time.  Old issues you thought were gone may resurface to be dealt with more thoroughly, now.

It's a process dealing with your actual condition, not only with the most prominent symptoms of your condition, but with all of it.  It's for people who, when they do something, they mean it.  It's for people who intend results, not excuses.  It's for people who are intrigued by the possibility of awakening more of themselves, of being more competent in more areas, particularly with having command of "number 1" -- themselves.

The meaning of the word, "education"
is "to draw out or draw forth"
"e ducare".

It means taking the seeds of possibility present in a person and, one by one, bringing them to life.  In this case, what is being brought to life is the person's capacity to put attention on something and keep it there - and - the person's capacity to exercise their intention until they get the intended result.  It's backbone.

Backbone isn't machismo.  It isn't "no pain, no gain".  It isn't "suck it up".  It isn't boisterousness and it isn't readiness for confrontation.  Backbone is support and balance, suppleness and strength.

And that comes from competence, some basic forms of which emerge in somatic education.

Emerging from our dysfunctional patterns is like the emerging of the sun from behind clouds.

Take the changes in stride.  Notice the larger trend.  You emerge.

Life is a Dynamic Movement between Entropy and Neg-entropy.

The tendency of latent potentials to activate,
and thereby expend themselves,
physicists call the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics:
The Law of Entropy.

"latent potentials" means "what's possible"
"activate" means "becomes actual"
"expend" means "give ones gifts"
"Entropy" is the relative amount of order or disorder
characterizing a living (or active) system.

The movement from disorder to disorder
characterizes the down-hill slope
that makes things run.

Things run down.

Meaning.

They move from no-function
to function
to non-function.

UNLESS.

A peculiar phenomenon known as neg-entropy
comes into play.

Neg-entropy is emergent
like the light of the Sun is emergent from the Sun.

It is the formation of living (active) functions
in existence
by means of the gathering and organizing
of the forces of existence
into behaviors of some duration (durability).

It exists in both living and non-living realms.

It's just that the non-living realms
are running a downhill slope,
while the living realms
are bringing to life
newly emergent functions.

One of those newly emergent functions
is to make non-living realms
run uphill,
going from less active (less functional)
to more active (more functional).

In the non-living or inanimate realms
we call that
Technology.

Another of those newly emergent functions
is to make the living realms
run uphill longer and further
going from active (functional) in some ways
into active in more ways.

Neg-entropy
is that function.

In the living or animate realms,
we call the first stage of increasing entropy
Maturation
and we call the second stage of increasing entropy
Evolution.

In both cases, personal abilities emerge
we put energy into them
and we expend ourselves in our developing potentials.

Immaturity is a lower-entropy level.
As immaturity matures,
latent personal abilities emerge
dispensing the energies of the being
among those abilities.

Maturity is a higher-entropy level.
There are more ways to function
and more functions active
more ways to dispense our energies
and more dispersion of them.

Here's where the trick of the Neg-entropists comes in:
how to recover what we have lost to entropy,
how to recover from the scattering of our energies.

THE QUANDARY:
As functions awaken, energies or potentials disperse.
There's a limit to how much attention a person can give
to conditions at any moment.
Our functional capacity is limited.
"Ya can only get so much done in a day."

THE UPGRADE
Reversing the increase of entropy.
Clean-up.

First step:
Identify points of friction in life,
grounded in memories.

Abilities that worked for us in the past
may not apply or fit well to present conditions.
That poor fit creates friction.
That poor fit is based in our memory of how things
used to work, but no longer do, exactly.
Friction.

Dissolve the grip of those memories,
make room for something new and better-fitting:
dissolve the friction.
Less friction, less wasted effort.
That applies to "internal contractions" (broken integrity).

Reclaim and recycle our capacity for
attending, intending, remembering and imagining
taken up by old, not such good ways of doing and being,
anymore.

Second step:
Apply that reclaimed and recycled capacity
to current projects.

"Current projects" means "creative activities".

Attention has the peculiar property that
the more you look,
the more you see
(or hear, or feel).

That's emergence.

And the more coherent the looking
("coherent" means "having it together",
more signal, less noise)
the more likely it is that something coherent will emerge
from the inchoate mass of latent potentials.

Something new emerges.

That's neg-entropy in action, recovering energy and attention,
then inducing new things emerging in the new-again movement toward higher entropy -- life occurring.

Another word for coherence is, integrity.
Another name for neg-entropy is, newness.

Entropy is the activating of potentials and expending of resources;
neg-entropy is the integration of potentials,
into simplified, larger wholes in patterns of organization
and the reclaiming and conserving of resources.

Living and evolving species need and embody
both entropy and neg-entropy.

Too much entropy puts a drag on everything.
Too much neg-entropy may create a sonic boom
of emergence.  Might be a bit much.

It's a question of balance.

The Faith and Freedom Coalition | Orwell was right. What Makes Them TIck?

I recently received a questionnaire (click to see) in the mail from The Faith and Freedom Coalition (see images).

click to see the entire questionnaire
It's an example of how unscrupulous political action distorts the legitimate ways in which the Public Conversation addresses the issues of the day. It represents itself as a survey questionnaire, when it functions as an instrument of propaganda. Legitimate survey takers take great pains to avoid introducing bias into their questions; this questionnaire is blatantly biased from page 1. The Faith and Freedom Coalition dishonestly portray their position (as serving the public good) and that of others (as evil) and they do so as if they had some righteousness. But read their questionnaire! (click  image to download and read).

Here's the quandary of the Faith and Freedom Coalition: They're part of a mass sector of human culture who are self-righteous, clever, but essentially primitive thinkers who claim privilege without responsibility to any but themselves and those who share their interests -- the very mood of political partisanship and political gridlock. They are the worst kind of sinners:  unrepentent.  Very tribe-like. Primitive.

Here's another sample from the so-called, "Judicial Watch" -- another Republican arm bent upon destroying the republic through corruption of our democracy.

We see another act of both dishonesty and hypocrisy, accusing the Obama Administration of exactly what the Republican Party has done, itself:  manipulation of the voter rolls to make it more difficult for people to be eligible to vote -- under the deceptive name, "Judicial Watch".
By contrast, here is the Democratic survey questionnaire, issued under the name of Nancy Pelosi, ostensibly for the same purpose. (click image to download and read).

Their quandary is that the world is integrating -- integrating across all kinds of lines, including religious -- and these people don't want to integrate or be integrated. They want to stay encapsulated, in control of what they encapsulate, and to encapsulate more. They want "to rule the world."

I leave it to you to come to mind with a disease that fits that description.

Their quandary is understandable: It's a matter, in some sense, of survival, survival not in a biological sense, but in the sense of identity.  It's a matter of Not Having to Change.

And so those of their ilk
seek to heave sway
to disrupt the integration process
presently reshaping the world
and which is the world's hope
in these times of great change.

They use any means at their disposal
including disseminating biasedly partial and distorted information
and accusing those they oppose of things of which they, themselves, are guilty
to manipulate the social conversation toward their own end,
interfering with the public voice (including voting),
and buying exposure time in the public mass communications media
for their self-serving messages
to further the disruption
of what is largely and well underway:
global integration.

Now, we know why.

They declare their "faith" and claim their "freedom"
specifically because they have no faith in cultural developments they don't control;
their freedom is their presumed right
to disrupt others who are more in the forefront of change
than they are.

It is the faith of the fearful
and the freedom of the brat.

It's the strategy of those who have too limited mental capacity to balance multiple values,
too limited mental capacity to incorporate multiple viewpoints,
and too little respect for others to want to do so,
so they take one set of values and viewpoint (their own),
make it the be-all and end-all of their actions
and disregard the rest
in an approach guaranteed to generate imbalances and dysfunction.

Is that how you want the people of our government to conduct themselves?

Mature adults, intead of advancing themselves by tearing others down,
advance themselves and others by bringing everyone up
by conveying their unique contributions
to others who need them
-- a healthy capitalism,
in contrast to the parasitical capitalism
that feeds from the commonwealth disproportionately to its contribution
and causes the rich the get rich and the poor to get poorer.

It's "A Dog Eat Dog World"
is the mindset of more primitive times
and of unscrupulous behavior.

It is the mindset of those who can't do better,
but who still want control.

It is no justification for the abandonment of honor in politics
and it should be recognized for what it is:
immaturity in action.

As to the rest of us, I say,
A Wise General Makes Wise Use of His Resources

The Creative Spiral

The Creative Spiral is not a system of thought, but a series of intentions that integrate into a cohesive network of interconnections that empower intention. Each of the eight stages are intentions known by feeling, that when interconnected by linking together in feeling-attention deepen each other the way the two views of our two eyes combine for depth perception. The Creative Spiral is a sensuous experience of deepening penetration of the movement of attention into the spaces of experience.

Free Your Psoas Walking into the Floor, Walkthrough 2014 2 17

Walking Into the Floor is the third somatic education exercise of the self-relief program, Free Your Psoas. This exercise coordinates and frees the psoas muscles, front of the thighs, and back muscles in movement patterns similar to walking. It integrates the core musculature of the pelvis and trunk as well as the superficial muscles commonly referred to as "core" -- the abdominals.

As with all somatic education programs, this exercise depends for its effectiveness upon good results with the preceding somatic education exercises, Locating the Center of Breathing and Slide and Turn (which distinguishes the psoas muscles from the neighboring and more superficial gluteus minimus and rectus femoris muscles).

You may find it helpful to view this summary walkthrough.

Time Fields

First thing:
Time is motion,
nothing more,
nothing else.

We use motion to "measure" time
but "mark time" is a better term.

The cycling of the seasons: a year
The turn of the Earth: a day
The interval between two heartbeats: the "second"
The phasing of the Earth's moon,
The moving second-hand of an analogue clock as it passes fixed marks,
The changing numerical symbols of a digital clock,
The resonant vibration of a cesium clock,
The 1-0-1-0 cycling ("flopping") of a computer-CPU.

Your attention span.

Time is movement.

Gravity is all about movement.
It's described in terms of movement:
32 feet/second per second acceleration.
One second later, it's traveled 32 feet.
Two seconds later, it's traveled 80 feet
Three seconds later, it's traveled 141 feet.

Gravity is all about time.  Gravity is one of the four fundamental forces of the Universe.

We can now interpret "reality" in terms of movement.

Reality is conceived in terms of space and time.

The "and" is significant, here.

There is no time without movement,
and therefore,
no time without space.

There is also no space without time.

Only what moves is noticed,
and therefore,
measurable.

Movement is all-relative.

What is not moving, relative to us,
is not noticed by us.

And by "relative to us",
I mean "relative to the "hereness" of the "noticer".

The "noticer" -- that's you --
"hereness" -- that's where you always are,
wherever you are.

No movement, no noticing.
No noticing, no experience of time.

What we are noticing is what is moving, relative to us,
or we, moving relative to him, her, or it.

Memory is the sensor
of time fields.
It provides a means of making time conscious
by providing a way to compare (or measure)
change.
No memory,
to capacity to measure and record change.

Time fields
are strange attractors of attention.

Like gravity wells,
they draw us in
and we move toward them,
captured and captivated
by the experience of them
experienced in us.

They are time warps,
those strangely attractive events
that we experience as the events of life.

We are attracted,
according to our own uniqueness,
to certain kinds of experience
as the unfolding of our entelechy (developmental potential)
the maturation and development of us as unique selves.

Life is time of a special sort:
emergent time.

Life is the effulgent flowering
of the mundane events of our lives.

Each flowering
is strangely attractive,
captivating of our attention . . . . .
for a time.

And then we move on to another
strangely attractive event
that captivates our attention
moment to moment.

What makes entelechy,
the maturation (and emergence) of unique selves,
a special sort of time
is the emergence of it.

It is not yet cylical.  Things don't repeat.

The curve of our trajectory is still forming.

It is like the constant, Pi,
the relation of lengths
between the diameter and the circumference
of a circle,

also the relation
between the male (straight)
and the female (curved) --
same thing.

Pi never can completely be defined
because it is infinitely
finely
resolving,
never resolved
always fine-tuning
toward "the sweet spot" of exactness.

They've calculated Pi to some 5,000 digits
last I heard.

And it goes on.

Male and Female

Space is measured in time.

It takes time to determine the two ends of a span
and to measure the distance.
It doesn't happen instantly.

Measuring space requires time.

That's how time and space
are not time"and"space,
but two perspectives
or ways of looking at,
or ways of describing,
the same thing.

That said, time fields are all.

Our sense of time fields
is the sense of the experience of the moment.

Sometimes, time seems to drag;
sometimes, time seems to speed by.

A common observation
is that time -- the years --
is passing more quickly as time passes.

This acceleration of time
is curiously similar
to the acceleration of the expansion
of the Universe.

Life, for animate beings,
is timed by heartbeat,
breath,
digestive
and sleep cycles,
the lunar cycle,
the seasons.

for plants,
by temperature,
light,
climate and weather cycles.

Time fields are all.

Attention rests in time fields
and moves in time fields
and is made of time fields.

Time is the very substance of experience,
its duration,
its substantiality,
its rate of change.

Nothing "has" duration.
Nothing "has" substantiality.

Duration is the substantiality, itself.
No duration, no substantiality.

Movement is appearance.
No movement, no appearance.

No "thing" is changing,
The apparent existence of things
is change, itself.

Changing, or being in a changing circumstance, IS the thing,
even ordinarily regarded.

Time fields are all,
seen from various perspectives,
defined by those various perspectives.
calling into existence
the experience of "things"
by appearing to persist in memory.
